This edition incorporates an original introduction from Moorside Press, including a biography, a critical discussion of Hardy's place in the history of British Literature and a short contextual discussion of the book.
Published in 1891 in a censored, serialised format in the Graphic Magazine, Tess of the d'Urbervilles was Hardy's twelfth novel and arguably his best. The plot follows the varying fortunes of Tess Durbeyfield following the revelation that their family name is actually a corrupt form of the older, Norman surname d'Urberville. After becoming pregnant from a barely hidden rape ordeal, Tess loses the child (named Sorrow) and is then thrown this way and that by fate and love. When a form of resolution finally arrives, any relief it supplies is a long way from the romantic finale some would like to see, but it is resolution never the less.
Hardy invested a lot of time and certainly a lot of himself in creating the character of Tess and even though the book shows no real sympathy in the way that fate deals with her, she still comes out of her ordeals with grace and pride. The way that Hardy portrays her striding through his Wessex landscape gives her a timeless aspect and strong hints towards a Goddess trapped in the present. When fate finally catches up to her, she's lying down on a slab inside Stonehenge and you can imagine it’s the place of sacrifice; the landscape serving up the Goddess on a time-worn alter.
While Tess received mixed reactions from critics and other authors – Henry James, in a private letter to Robert Louis Stevenson, described it as one of the ' … worst, least sane, most voluu books I have yet read … ' – despite the bile, the book sold and sold, passing through editions in scant time and allowing Hardy to revise each one.

One of Thomas Hardy best books ever. At least one of my favorites. It is a very dark story and yet it demonstrates this young woman (Tess) will to survive.Product details
